Fear Me ~ B.B. Reid

SYNOPSIS
I don't believe in Fairy-tales and Prince Charming. I believe in fear. He taught me how to be afraid. We first met on a playground during a wonderful summer day. It was the first time he hurt me and it wasn't the last. For ten years he's been my tormentor and I've been his forbidden. But then he went away and yet I was still afraid. Now he's back and wants more than just my tears. You see...he thinks I sent him away so now he wants revenge...and he knows just how to get it. PLEASE READ THE WARNINGS. This book is a new adult and contains rough elements such as harsh language, mild violence, strong sexual content, alpha male, antihero, blackmail, and dubious consent. Readers should be 18+. This book contains a CLIFFHANGER and is not a standalone.

3.5 I-hate-you-I-love-you corsets

"Every moment is mine - your thoughts, your hopes, your dreams are all mine. I will always know where you are and what you are doing. You are mine... at least for the next year."

Bullied mercilessly for 10 years, Lake Monroe held on to the hope that after high school she’d escape her tormentor, Keiran Masters. When Keiran returns to school after a stint in juvie, Lake never prepared herself for the moment he’d declare “You’re mine.”

Mixing hatred, fear, desire, and long-standing grudges is a volatile combination as Keiran and Lake continue to dance around each other never revealing that it truly is that each wants. Lake can’t let go of the hurt in the past and Keiran continues putting Lake through mind games. Will Lake bend to his will or can she still hold on to the hope of escaping him?

First off this was a loooonnnggg book filled with mixed signals, ANGST galore, and age-questionable hot scenes. I struggled grasping the ages of the characters in this book- they acted way too mature and adult to be in high school! Plus there were barely any parents present throughout the book- it was hard for me to find that believable. I think the characters would’ve been more relatable around college age.

During the first 40% of the book we learn a lot of background information regarding Keiran’s bullying of Lake. My heart broke for her… I couldn’t imagine the torment she had to go through. After the first 40% the book really picked up and I found myself engrossed in the story. There was so much detail into all of the character’s lives and I enjoyed reading about other characters other than the Lake & Keiran.

However, around 60% there was a revelation and the character’s personalities drastically changed. This really took away from the story for me because I have no idea who Lake and Keiran really are- one minute Lake is an extremely meek and scared girl who hasn’t stood up for herself in over 10 years and the next she’s hanging with the popular group, getting in fights, and has a feisty attitude? Did I miss something? Also, I found her actions didn’t match- she’d fly off the handle if Keiran flirted with another girl- but something way serious was brushed off.
Fear Me ends with a cliffhanger and I would definitely like to know what happens next. Although the characterization of the main characters didn’t work for me I did enjoy reading this book and would recommend it to others.
