Why two ratings? Well, there was an aspect of this story that I loved and an aspect that I didn't. I averaged it out to 3 stars but my thoughts reflect both a 2 and a 4 star rating.
Why four stars?
I love this series- every installment is a page-turner. The story arcs are unpredictable and get me every time... the author is a dark mastermind. I enjoyed the tone and flashback elements of this novella... we are bounced around from months ago to present time and the story unfolds as if we're solving a difficult puzzle.
Also, the ending was sick and twisted and I never expected such a shocking ending! I loved it!
Why two stars?
This took away a lot of my reading enjoyment... I felt both characters were too far gone from their original selves that I couldn't relate to the story anymore and couldn't connect the previous part of the series to them. It was as if I was reading about two new people. Cereus became so evil and mentally incoherent to reality that I disliked her and couldn't carry the same fondness I had from the previous books. Ryan lost his "edge" and wasn't the twisted anti-hero I fell in love with before... his character seemed to plateau in my opinion.
Overall, a good story and I couldn't put it down- I just couldn't get past the characters not even being remotely close to their original characterization. *sigh*
No matter what the Empathy series is one of the best I've read all year and I am a huge fan of the author's... I will continue on with her other dark stories. xx

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters. I wanted to be an actress growing up so I could live many roles but I learned early on that my mind was too active… I would want to change the script.I would watch films and think of ways they could have improved the story if they took another direction so i thought it best that i tell my own.
My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light, some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.
When I’m not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I’m a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.
