Counsellor (Acquisition #1) ~ Celia Aaron

In the heart of Louisiana, the most powerful people in the South live behind elegant gates, mossy trees, and pleasant masks. Once every ten years, the pretense falls away and a tournament is held to determine who will rule them. The Acquisition is a crucible for the Southern nobility, a love letter written to a time when barbarism was enshrined as law. Now, Sinclair Vinemont is in the running to claim the prize. There is only one way to win, and he has the key to do it — Stella Rousseau, his Acquisition. To save her father, Stella has agreed to become Sinclair's slave for one year. Though she is at the mercy of the cold, treacherous Vinemont, Stella will not go willingly into darkness. As Sinclair and Stella battle against each other and the clock, only one thing is certain: The Acquisition always ends in blood. Full disclosure: This book is a dark romance with elements of slavery, violence, BDSM, and super-hot sex. It is the first of a series and ends on a cliffhanger. If you're good with these caveats, enjoy.

In the heart of every man is a darkness. Primal. Instinctive. At its most basic, it's a desirous nature-one that covets, demands, takes.

Counsellor Sinclair Vinemont, the ruthless attorney in Louisiana, is sure of his conviction against Mr. Rousseau. Stella, Rousseau's daughter, would do ANYTHING to protect her dear ol' dad including agreeing to becoming property of Counsellor Sinclair for a period of one year. Little does she know, Sinclair has much bigger plans for her.

Lately I've been reading some REALLY dark content books but I found I enjoyed this one quite a bit! I absolutely love the "classic" feel of dark romance- I can't quite explain in words- but just the timeless notion of a damsel in distress and the hard anti-hero with a heart. Sinclair is the typical tall, dark, & handsome man brooding in his fancy house but he did have a few redeeming moments and seems to struggle with his darkness. Stella was a very likable and pure character but had enough spice to keep her viewpoint interesting.

Naivete swirled around her like a priceless perfume. The vein at her neck fluttered in a distress rhythm. It was beautiful, like the pale wings of a butterfly-and just as fragile.

I do wish there was more to this story...there was foreshadowing towards events that haven't happened yet. I do know it's a series- but I feel there should have been more to somewhat complete this installment. Regardless I plan to look into book two!

One thing I also really liked was one of the twists at the end. I love when the author takes the road less traveled! The ending had a few twists that definitely caught my attention.

Overall, a really good read with a fast-moving plot and some unique elements that aren't in every dark romance out there. I would recommend this book to newbie dark readers who want to dip their toes in or seasoned dark readers who want a bit of fluff to mix it (when I say fluff it's definitely subjective!!)

4 stars xx
